2019 RAM HEAVY DUTY PICKUPS

2019 RAM HEAVY DUTY PICKUPS

Heavy-duty pickups are major workhorses, suited to seriously demanding applications and very much professional tools, rather than recreational trucks. All the volume pickup manufacturers feature an HD in their lineups and the latest to arrive on the scene is one from Ram, which is also available as a chassis-cab for conversion to anything from a box van to an RV.

The New Ram HD is a big, rugged-looking, truck and has a great no-nonsense look about it – all business, would probably be a good description. Perhaps more importantly than looks, it has a 98.5-percent high-strength steel frame with exceptional torsional rigidity. Lightweight materials in the frame and powertrain help reduce weight over earlier models and an aluminium hood helps too.

As is common in the world of pickups, there are many variants and trim levels available along with a multitude of options. These are best discussed with the truck specialist at Richmond Chrysler Dodge Jeep so that the vehicle can be tailored exactly for your needs. Cab configuration, box size and other major factors result in major price differences from one end of the range to the other. The most basic unit is a “work special” model that includes everything needed for versatile use, but without too many frills.

The top engine for this truck is a mighty 6.7-litre 400-horsepower Cummins turbo-diesel that delivers an amazing 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque. The standard engine for the 2500 and 3500 range is a 6.4-litre Hemi V-8 with 410-horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. The diesel has an upgraded six-speed transmission and the Hemi uses an eight-speed. Four-wheel drive is available right through the Ram HD range and they use a BorgWarner transfer case. In the case of the diesel version, the transfer case is beefed up to handle higher input loads.

To help drivers who are towing, an auxiliary 360-degree camera gives an excellent view all around the vehicle and trailer and is a great asset when manoeuvring. The Ram HD with the Cummins diesel will tow a substantial 35,100-lbs and the Hemi has excellent towing capabilities too. Apart from the obvious work-oriented towing chores, both trucks will handle the largest of fifth-wheel recreational vehicles. Adding a role like that makes these HD trucks very versatile for a wide variety of work and recreational applications.
